In the beautiful Scottish Highlands, there is a large lake called Loch Ness. This lake is famous for many reasons. However, the most popular story about Loch Ness is that there is a very old creature living in the lake. Many people travel from far away, hoping to see the famous Loch Ness Monster. Some think that the monster is the last dinosaur, but others are skeptical and think these stories are just a hoax.
Believers like to call this creature Nessie. They say it’s logical that humans cannot capture this amazing legend. However, many other people say that there is just not enough proof that Nessie is real. They refuse to be duped into thinking that giant creatures like this could live on Earth.
Romeo is telling Gary about a TV show that said the Loch Ness Monster might be real. Do either of them believe it? Listen to today’s English lesson to find out.

Romeo: I think I got pranked last night.
Gary: What?
Romeo: I was watching the Animal Planet, and they had this special on the Loch Ness Monster. And they seemed to think that it actually does exist.
Gary: Well, yeah, like Bigfoot!
Romeo: Yeah, like it might be a dino…
Gary: Yeah, it’s totally a dinosaur. It’s actually in the Loch Ness.
Romeo: OK, so either you’ve seen the show, too, or you’ve been duped, or both.
Gary: No, I’m absolutely certain that it exists.
Romeo: It’s not a hoax?
Gary: No! It’s just a big beast that’s underwater. No?
Romeo: I don’t know. I’m a little skeptical. I think I need more proof, more evidence.
Gary: I don’t see us capturing it. If it’s been in this water as long as it’s been, we’re not going to be able to capture it. It’s really smart.
Romeo: Yeah, I imagine it would be hard to capture a beast.
Gary: Well, and even more so, it’s hard to capture a legend. I mean that is just an amazing, beautiful creature that’s only been photographed… once?
Romeo: So, like UFOs?
Gary: And Bigfoot!
Romeo: Sasquatch!
Gary: The chupacabra!
Romeo: Yes.
Gary: They’re all amazing!
Romeo: Alright, I’ll be a believer for now… until someone proves otherwise.

Discussion
Romeo watched a TV show about the Loch Ness Monster. The show said that this creature might be real. Romeo thinks this is crazy, so he tells Gary about it. Gary isn’t surprised at all. He believes that legendary creatures, like Nessie, are real. In fact, he thinks that the Loch Ness Monster is actually the world’s last dinosaur.
Romeo can’t believe it! He is still skeptical, and he wants more proof before he can believe in a legend like Nessie. Gary tells him that Nessie is very smart, and it would be difficult to capture her. It is even difficult for people to take pictures of her. Gary also thinks that other legendary creatures, like Bigfoot and chupacabras, are real. Romeo agrees to suspend his disbelief for now.
Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster? What legendary creatures live in your country?
