The Lumineers is a folk rock band started by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites. They began to collaborate in 2005, adding band members and eventually releasing the hit single “Ho Hey” in 2012. The Lumineers’ self-titled debut album has been extremely successful in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.

The band is proud of the simplicity of their music. “Anyone who can play an instrument can play a Lumineers song,” says Fraites. Are you skilled in music? Go on… give it a go. Listen in on Mason and Greta’s conversation about The Lumineers in this music English lesson.

Mason:  You know what song I just can’t get out of my head lately?

Greta:  No. What song is that?

Mason:  That “Hey Ho” song by The Lumineers.

Greta:  You know, I don’t know if I’ve heard it.

Mason:  I’m pretty sure you have. It’s kind of been everywhere lately. Like, it’s one of those folk Americana Renaissance songs. There are a few bands that are really tapping into that spirit right now.

Greta:  Is it an American band?

Mason:  It is. So, it’s actually… I went and looked them up, the guys who started it have been playing for seven or eight years. But then they didn’t really get the core band together until about a year ago. This is their first album. By all accounts, it’s doing pretty well. Like number one or two.

Greta:  Interesting. Where are they from?

Mason:  They’re from New Jersey where you’ve got the kids from the city who just want to tap into this rural folk music tradition.

Greta:  Interesting. And the band is called The Lumineers?

Mason:  Yeah. It’s definitely part of what’s going on right now in terms of that nostalgic… I personally think and hope it’s kind of the natural reaction to just the overproduced pop stuff where you have things that sound grittier. You hear the people singing in echo-ey rooms and stuff like that.

Greta:  It has that Americana feel to it.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Greta and Mason are discussing the band The Lumineers that has recently become popular. Mason has researched the band and he’s sharing details with Greta. Greta’s not sure that she’s even heard The Lumineers’ hit single.

Mason feels that the band’s style is a reaction to popular music today. He explains that folk rock is influenced by traditional music from rural areas of the US. It’s hard to say if Mason prefers The Lumineers’ style to today’s pop music.

Which do you prefer? Is modern music better than traditional music? Or can the two be combined to make something even more significant?

To combine different styles from old to new and across different cultures is essential when you work creatively and want to create something, that no-one has heard before. Music is something, that has to change through generations. It’s nice that contemporary and traditional music can influence today’s musicians and reach a new generation. The Lumineers did a good job. I admit, I bought the music after this article.

I love music. It is all my life,so I have really different songs on my personality playlist. I listen to every kind of music-modern and traditional but it’s not a secret that electronic music is special for me.

Yeah, combination can be really interesting, amazing but sometimes it can be the worst idea :p

So, as many people as many tastes :))

Both of them are good but they should not be overproduced and  i think with combining them we can get something more significant.

I didn’t know this song and band. But after this lesson this band is interesting for me. I’m listening this hit today. Actually I love pop and R’n’b music. I like some songs from other stiles, but I should have another life situation for it (sad or nervous, or romantic).

I have listened to the hit single “Ho Hey”. That song sounds very nice but it is not my favorite. I prefer modern music, such as pop, rock and EDM (Electronic Dance music). I think young people like new styles music more. Am I right? But I think it’s also a good way to combine these two kinds of music.  In China we like some of Jay Chou’s songs which mix traditional and modern music together and those songs are really great. Like “东风破”, “青花瓷”, ”千里之外” and so on. Maybe you could Google these songs and have a try!

I dont know many American songs actually. However, in Hong Kong where is a part of China’s special administration Region, there are many songs produced througout years. I am 3x years old and I’d like the traditional songs produced between 70s – 90s more than the modern one. It is because the lyrics of traditional songs involved more meaningful meanings and most of them reflected the real life of Hong Kongers.
