It’s lovely to have some nice, green houseplants to decorate your home. Unless you have a green thumb, though, it can be hard to figure out how to keep them alive. More light, or less? Soak the soil, or keep it dry?

Some people find it hard even to remember to water their houseplants. They neglect their plants, and one day discover they’re all dried up. Learn about Mason and Jason’s experience with houseplants in this gardening English lesson.

Jason

Mason:  Jason, we’re a couple of dudes. Have you ever been able to keep a houseplant alive?

Jason:  They’re not happy, but they’re alive.

Mason:  Alright.

Jason:  I’ve got three of them, and I’ve had them for two years.

Mason:  Wow.

Jason:  Yeah.

Mason:  I have no houseplants, and I now have a yard, and I’m, like, killing everything in the yard.

Jason:  Wow.

Mason:  Not on purpose. It just happens because I’m neglectful.

Jason:  But houseplants, I mean even though they’re right there in front of you, it’s hard to remember to water them. You just sort of start to take them for granted after a while.

Mason:  For sure. You know, because the problem with houseplants is you think, you trick yourself into thinking, “This is a natural thing that normally supports itself,” but because you put it in this little pot, it’s reliant on you.

Jason:  Fortunately all mine need to be watered about once a week, so I do them all at once. They’re not on different schedules. I think that helps.

Mason:  Definitely. What kind of plants only need to be watered once a week? I need these plants.

Jason:  Well, this is proof that I don’t have a green thumb. I actually don’t know what kind of plants I have. I got them from someone else. I think they’re succulents, but I just let them soak. I give them a lot of water once a week, and then when they start to droop, I give them some more.

Mason asks Jason, as a fellow man, if he’s ever had any luck keeping a houseplant alive. Jason replies that he has a few that are doing OK. Mason is impressed that they’re alive at all. He’s never been good at growing things.

Jason agrees that it can be hard to care for houseplants. It’s easy to forget to water them. Mason thinks that this might be because they seem as if they should be able to take care of themselves.

Jason thinks the key to his houseplant success might be that his plants only need to be watered once a week. He hasn’t got such a green thumb, though; he doesn’t even know the type of plants that he has.

Do you keep houseplants in your house? Do you have a green thumb? What are some tricks you’ve used to keep your houseplants alive?

I really like plants. But I don’t have a green thumb. I learnt that when I was a student at university. I tried to grow geranium but I failed.

I also heard that plants can feel. I read about an experiment. A scientist buys two plants and keeps them in different rooms. he waters them in same way and the rooms have enough light. For both plant, everything is same except the scientist’s approach. The scientist tell the first plant that he loves it, that it’s perfect. And he tells the second one that he hates it and it’s ugly. After a while the first one blooms the second one dies.

One trick ist to tell the plant: “If you don’t grow, you come to the compost heap” .... okay there is no warranty ;-)

My green thumb is in development ;) But I think, a flat or house needs to have a green “eye catcher”.

LESYA AND BELLA you are making a point  , I have read that  plants respond  to the stimulus  of  music:Vivaldi and the like  ,they are happy  listening in  these kind of music, also they have feelings of fear. We should talk to them in a loving and caring voice , they !respond blooming nicely ”.

I have never wanted to keep plants at home , why, they are so beautiful ,many of you would say , and I  quite agree , but  the problem is with  my lack if interest  in  having to worry to keep them healthy  and happy.  I have a friend  who is the guru of the cactuses,  he has a nursery  and a thriving  business  selling succulents . One day I decided to change my mind and give it a shot    ordering a set of  cactuses from him , the plus-side is  that I knew that  I wouldn´t be charged  at all….free. a gift from my friend. I happily  took them at home  to start a new life with me,big mistake,  cactuses are what I would say  ”low-maintenance ”, few water and in winter nothing , easier ehhhh !  I must have mercilessly watered them down  because they didn´t  make it  to the next summer,  ouch!!!

i have a lil area in my house full of green plants like herbs, shurbs, flowers and bushes. and yes i am blessed with green thumb. its my hobby i can say to grow plants and take care of them i think plants gives a caress to our busy life and add freshness. i also grow some fruits and vegies and its a best part of home grown plants for my kitchen. if u wanna take good care of them, my tip is,.......... plants are living as we are so if we keep them in our house they become our family member now they are our responsibility like other house mambers we have to share our time with them by taking care of them we can even talk and gossip with them we have to love them and they ll too in respons. please dont neglect them they are so sensitive.

At times when I was in the maternity leave my house looked like an orangery ;) There were lots of different kinds of houseplants.

They felt themselves well under the care I took for them.

Each houseplant had a special approach from me. I knew their character and habits. :)

By the time I had to start my working life again I knew that my houseplants will be lack of care because of the lack of my time :(

Therefore I presented some kinds of them to my friends and brought the rest ones to the office I work in.

I have always had special feelings to the Orchids, Cactuses and housplants of the family Araceae.

These kinds of plants are not  so demanding and willingly please me with fabulous blooming.

I learnt “to feel” flowers that’s why I can probably call myself a green thumb.
