Sara:  I just heard a news report the other day about the anniversary of that terrible fire at that rock music club in Rhode Island. Do you remember that?

Jason:  Oh, yeah. I think about it all the time, especially when I’m at a really crowded house party.

Sara:  Uh huh.

Jason:  Because there’s not really security or laws making sure that it’s safe there.

Sara:  Do you, like, look to see if you can spy a fire extinguisher on the wall or something?

Jason:  I do. And I think about that night in Rhode Island.

Sara:  I know, I mean, I just imagine those people being packed in there, and then the band set off these fireworks, and then I guess the material they had on the walls just burst into flames.

Jason:  Wow. Yeah. It’s just so strange. I mean, one minute you’re just in a building, like you are every day, and the next thing you know it’s trying to kill you. You know?

Sara:  I think…I feel like businesses need to be more responsible about that kind of thing, you know?

Jason:  I think it’s hard for them, because it just doesn’t happen that often.

Sara:  Right.

Jason:  But when it does happen, it’s so horrific that it definitely… I don’t know, I think there’s a lot of laws about it. Like I know people who have tried to open businesses and not been allowed to because they didn’t have proper fire exits in place.

Sara:  Oh right, it wasn’t up-to-code or something like that.

Jason:  Yeah.

Sara:  Yeah, I think it’s just better to be prepared, even if it costs you a little bit more money in the beginning. You know, to put it more economically, at least you’re avoiding a major lawsuit if you’re just prepared right from the beginning.

Jason:  Yeah.

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Sara mentions to Jason that she recently heard a news story about the anniversary of a terrible fire at a club in Rhode Island. Jason says that he actually thinks about that fire frequently, particularly when he’s at a crowded house party. He thinks about how prepared he would be if a fire broke out there.

The two then think about how terrible it would be to be in a fire like that. One minute everything is normal, and the next, the whole place is up in flames.

Sara thinks that businesses need to be responsible about making sure they are prepared for a fire. Jason agrees, but says that sometimes it can be difficult, and expensive, for business owners to follow fire laws perfectly. Sara thinks it’s worth it, no matter what the cost, particularly because it could save a business from a future lawsuit.

Are you afraid of fires? Has you or anyone you know ever experienced a fire? How do you keep your house or business safe from fires?

Julito, what an awful tragedy that was man-caused.:(

Baset, the story you told confirmed strongly how dangerous fire could be. I have never seen such a terrible fire and I can imagine what those people felt. :(

I’m afraid of fire independently if it’s of an accidental or natural origin.

In a hot summer we have this problem in the countryside. The only match thrown down carelessly  can be the reason of a huge fire in the outskirts or in the woods. When I see flames of fire in the fields just next to my house, I’m awfully scared because fire brigades don’t always come to put it out. Very often the owners of the houses do this necessary job themselves. I have done it too. So I have experience in it. I can’t see when trees are in fire. They are alive like people.:(

As  for my city flat, I’m also very anxious because there were a few incidents in my city when gas cookers burst out and the buildings were broken. There were also  people  injured and dead after that tragedy.

Old lonely people living in the multystoried buildings can make a tiny mistake while using gas and… it can cause a big problem. I had such a woman next door. But even young people can be not careful enough.

So the verdict is BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE!

Peru

Yes, fires makes me afraid of that. In Peru there was something like that in Lima some days before Christmas or New Year Eve I do not remember. The curios is that day I was walking near that place trying to buy something and looking for my father who has dissapeared 10 minutes before. I did not know what to do turn right or left so I decided to turn left and go home I was late. I arrived home, then I turned Tv on, watched the news and what has happened: that place has been burned because of fireworks which some people sell near there and many people died.

Joy : in fact , this is a huge Q , but in a few lines :

fire

How people first used fire is still unknown; In early days, people did not cook food. They ate everything raw, including meat and fish. But the discovery of fire changed the way of eating food completely. They cooked food. The  people soon found that cooked food was more delicious. Fire became an important thing since then.

Moreover, fire gave the early people warmth and light. Even in there scanty clothes people could keep themselves warm in caves on rainy or cold nights. Caves were no longer dark. They could move about freely in the dark night. Besides, fire gave him protection from wild beast. Consequently, life was more secure than it had been. In fact, fire, like water and air, became indispensable to people. Today, we use fire for a variety of purposes. We use it even to operate machinery to produce goods.

However fire has to be kept under strict control. Once it is out of control, it will destroy lives and property at speed. The world has lost things worth billions of dollars because of fire. It is claimed that thousands of acres of forest was burned for growing crops.

On the other hand, fire has been used by people, especially of the modern age to destroy people. In the past, fire itself was used in the battles to fight against enemy. Even today, thousands of people in many parts of the world are being destroyed by fire.

Joy : good morning !

fire

In India, one night my sleep was suddenly disturbed by shouts of fire. I ran out of my house to find out what had happened.

I then saw a four-storeyed building on fire. Many people were screaming inside the building, and many were rushing out of it. Two women were so desperate that they tried to jump down through the windows; but they were pulled back by others inside the building.

Soon three fire-engines arrived, and the fire men began to work immediately. They threw a lot of water on to the building with the hoses of the fire-engines.

At last, after several hours, the fire was put out. By now some people were already burnt to death. Others were in a state of shock.

Soon two ambulances arrived and took the dead and the injured to the hospital. The police too arrived shortly to do what was necessary.

I felt very sad after this incident.

I work in a refinery, producing gasoline and kitchen gas, so I have faced some fires since I started working here…. we have to be prepared for this terrible situation, and we practice firefighting periodically….. there were two occasions with fire in 2012, and we were successful on puting the fire off…..thanks God.

The biggest fire I faced were in 2004 and it took 40 minutes to be extinguished. Nobody was hurt. In 1998 one worker died due fire. I wasn´t working that day.

Six years ago in Buenos Aires, a deadly fire  killed 194 youngters and injured 1432  more   . The tragedy happened when  fans of a rock group  set off  inside the venue bengal flares that ignited  foam decorations  that were hanging from the ceiling .Most of them died from inhaling poisonous gases ,not by burns.  In the aftermath of the tragedy, there were strong acusations  against the owner of the  disco  that  out of greediness oversold tickets to the concert ,to the rock band  and municipal inspectors that should had overlooked that  the  place is  safe and up-to-code .The owner was sent to prison  but what about the pain of Moms and Dads , brothers and sisters that  will not see  their loved ones again.Cry To set off bengal flares  in a packed in place is a barbaric act  ,shame on the people responsible for this.
