Americans love their sports. And not just professional sports. From Little League to college bowl games, we love to cheer for our favorite teams.

In some cities in the US, and especially in smaller towns, high school sports are hugely popular. Athletes are their school’s royalty, and games are major social events. Of course, American football is the biggest sport of them all.

Dale played varsity football for his high school. Hear him tell Jason about his experiences.

Jason:  I started dating this girl not too long ago, and it came up that her high school didn’t have any sports.

Dale:  That’s odd.

Jason:  Which I thought was really bizarre. But it was just a really small high school, so they couldn’t really field a team of anything, I guess.

Dale:  It’s almost every kind of American cliche to have a high school varsity football team, and I think that I was at least very honored to go through that during my high school days. I played on the football team.

Jason:  Yeah.

Dale:  So I really, really love it.

Jason:  Did you have to work really hard to make varsity at your school?

Dale:  Oh, absolutely, absolutely. You started as JV, started as freshman football, and you just got up there. But then now, I don’t pay attention to it at all.

Jason:  You don’t keep track of your old high school.

Dale:  Don’t even know. Don’t even know where they’re at, how they are. Don’t know anything at all.

Jason:  Were you actually a jock, would you say?

Dale:  Yes. But then after high school, after the football season was over, it just went away.

Jason:  So you were just a jock for this brief period of time, and then you went back to being a normal person who isn’t obsessed with sports.

Dale:  Exactly.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jason recently started dating a girl who went to a high school that had no sports teams. He thinks that is very unusual, and Dale agrees. In the US, most high schools have sports teams, and in many places, high school sports are very important.

Dale played on the varsity football team at his high school. He says it was a big honor. He had to work really hard to make the varsity team. But he doesn’t keep up with his old team anymore. He doesn’t know if the team is doing well and winning a lot of games now.

Are sports an important part of school where you live? Do people care about high school sports in your country?

Many people are crazy about sports in my city and the country where I live. I was in love with baseball growing up during high school. I didn’t go as far as being obsessed over it, but I did experience a strong desire and attachment to seeing my favorite baseball team win.

High school sports are so popular that any young player that stands out  in  football , basket ball , hockey , is likely to receive a scholarship  to study  and play for that  high school team.
