Intervention?

Intervention? English, baby! Video Lesson

Date: Jul 15 2008

Themes: Friend, Soap Opera

Intro

1. Learn Vocabulary - Learn some new vocabulary before you start the lesson.

One of the best ways to disguise something bad you’re doing is as something good. It catches people off guard, because no one wants to accuse a good person of doing something wrong.

So not too long after Jason caught Devan selling her CDs for pot, Beren found her pulling cans out of the trash. And now Marni has found her looking weak after donating plasma. Is Devan really an environmentalist, or does she just need money really bad for…something else?

3. Watch - Watch the video without reading the dialog.

Marni:  So thanks for meeting me here, guys. You’re here because I am concerned about our friend Devan.

Amanda:  Who cares.

Beren:  Why?

Amanda:  I’m sorry, what? I’m sorry.

Marni:  Well, I saw her the other day, I just ran into her on the street, and she looked like she was totally strung out.

Beren:  Really?

Marni:  Yeah. And I asked her, “What’s going on? Are you OK?” I was concerned. She actually said she had just donated plasma, which I…

Beren:  She’s on this whole do-gooder kick. I saw her cleaning out cans at her apartment complex.

Marni:  That’s not good.

Beren:  No, no. She’s helping. She’s taking them…

Marni:  That’s hitting bottom, don’t you think?

Beren:  ...to the recycling center. To help separate the cans from the glass and stuff.

Marni:  This is not an environmental concern…she’s…

Beren:  She’s donating blood to help victims.

Marni:  No…

Amanda:  I think you guys are kind of overreacting.

Marni:  Really?

Amanda:  I don’t mean to sound insensitive, but she’s a big girl. We’re all big girls. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

Beren:  She is a big girl. She’s responsible.

Amanda:  Do you want an intervention or something?

Marni:  Well, I think she needs help.

Beren:  Why? Don’t stop her! She’s doing good. Donating blood…

Marni:  I don’t see it that way though. I see it as…

Beren:  Donating plasma? That’s good. I heard it’s painful. It’s a painful procedure. They don’t pay you very much.

Marni:  Right. Exactly my point. Why would you do that unless you need money?

Amanda:  Well, she’s obviously healthy enough to call my boyfriend, so I think she’s fine. Was that biased?

Marni:  Just a little.

Discussion

Marni asked Beren and Amanda to meet her to talk about Devan. Marni is pretty sure that Devan is on drugs because she was recently using drugs and keeps doing strange things that produce a little money.

But Beren thinks Devan is just out to do her part to help the world. And Amanda doesn’t really care what happens to Devan since she’s been really jealous lately over the attention that Mason has been paying her.

So it looks like if Marni is going to confront Devan, she’ll have to do it on her own. What do you think Marni should do? What do you think is going on with Devan?

So they’re talking about Devan. Marni told them that Devan’s look like strunged out. And she believes that Devan is using drugs. She’s just concerned about her friend. But Amanda doesn’t really care about her because she’s jealous.  I think Devan knows what she’s doing because she’s already a big girl. and she needs the money to buy something bad like pot. I think Devan needs the advice of her friends.

I think this subject interesting. Everyone has friend who needs advice, so Devan needs intervention and friends.

So, Devan has lots of problem. First, she needs  therapy to understand what's going on. Then, she has to forget Mazon, there are many men around the globe. Finally, she needs an interesting job and talks with her friends about her life.

"Amanda doesn’t really care what happens to Devan since she’s been really jealous lately over the attention that Mason has been paying her."i think women should be in the same line,we shouldn't destroy the relation only because of one men.furthermore,Amanda should have confidence in herself,if one poeple choose you,you should give his/her adequated room.have you heard one words:Grip in the hands of the sand, the tight grip of the easier it is to disappear.please believe in yourself.don't blame others.

I think that's what friends are for.

When friends are in trouble, you need to be there for them without judging them. That's where the intervention comes.

When we are going a wrong way, we just need someone's help, not their judgement or criticism. And that's what friends can do. Accept whatever you do and always be there for you.

Hard to have a friend like that, huh?^^;;

I don't know what's going on with Devan maybe she  has problems or she just wants to do good things.

Marni should talk with Devan about her suspicion because maybe she's right and Devan really needs help.

I'd like to agree with Amanda that Devan is a big girl and  she should know what she is doing  and be responsible for what she has done. But as Devan's close friend Marni could have a talk with her about what is  happening  and show her concern. That will let Amanda  get friends care and let her frinds not so worry about her. That's my view~~

everyone’ friend has something hesitate to unveil. so when Devan seems to hide something , the best way in my mind is to have a direct talk with her as a friend usually does but try to avoid stopping her from the things that u think are wrong or improper when the things turns out not to hit bottom actually.
