“marktcheck” says that due to too many avocado plantations wells in some urban villages already start to dry out. Also villagers from there don’t profit from the avocado production as much as we are often told. Plus the outside of avocados is treated with pesticides – in some cases 60% more pesticide than some scientists recommend. Thus you should always wash your avocado.

Considering the international women’s day the human rights organisation “GfbV” now wrote an article about 10 remarkable female human rights activists:
Aura Lolita Chávez for example is a Mayan lady who keeps protesting against the destruction of the Guatemalan rainforest – despite regular death threats against her.
She says that the destruction of these trees also affects the flow of many rivers and creeks native tribes use to drink.
In Russia a native lady named Yana Tannagasheva recently even lost her job just because she spoke out against the production of coal on land that belonged to her ancestors. Some people even threatened her and family members of hers. Some even tried to set her house on fire.

>The aid-organization “Adveniat” now makes some advertisement for their projects in Latin America. As Christmas is approaching they have sent letters to households giving them information on how their projects are going: “Adveniat” says that in many Latin American countries – including Guatemala – peasants are having a hard time trying to get their families through as extreme weather recently has destroyed quite a lot of harvest. Most of the food those living in slums get to eat is rotten and they live in crowded shanties without water. Children show signs of malnutrition that will destroy their health permanently. Many of these kids have never seen a doctor.
On the bank account:
Bank im Bistum Essen eG
BIC: GENODED1BBE
IBAN: DE03 3606 0295 00000173 45
they collect money to educate and hire teachers to be and teach peasants for example in sustainable agriculture and hygiene.
>In case you want to get involved you will find tips concerning what you – the individual – could do on the websites “http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/adopt/projects/guatemala” and “http://www.worldlandtrust-us.org/?page=donate”. They depend on people who support them in their fight for the survival of the rainforest.

Hmmm…Thanks for the description of the book! I may read it later, but actually I prefer real historical novels and technically this isn’t a historical novel. From what I heard about it, it doesn’t fulfill the criteria a historical novel should fulfill, but is rather about adventure and such.

I read the book recently. The “location” was very vague, everyone figured the Brazil/Bolivia rainforest, but the original guy was looking for a legend which he never found, maybe the legend was based on a city farther north, maybe as far north as Guatemala?
Or maybe there’s another city they haven’t found yet like the one they did find.
“Unknown” to the searchers because they never found it, maybe it was Mayan and they didn’t know because they never saw the city, only heard stories of it’s existence.
This is pure speculation on my part just for fun, if I hadn’t just finished the book a couple of weeks ago, I wouldn’t have thought of it at all.

Ha! Ha! I didn’t know about this movie, so I had to google first to understand what you were talking about.
Good idea, but Wikipedia says that this movie takes place somewhere in Brazil and Bolivia, while these ruins were discovered in Guatemala.
Also according to Wikipedia the lost city of Z belongs to an unknown civilization, while the Maya are anything but unknown to us.
